UTAR student tries to drown herself?
http://www.chinapress.com.my/node/227013
A young lady tried to drown herself by jumping into the lake near UTAR, Perak, Kampar branch main gate.
Fortunately a security guard saw her and advised her "not to do anything stupid". However, she was not seem to be persuaded, the guard had no choice but to jump into the lake and saved her from the water. I wonder if she is a UTAR student?
How to uphold UTAR image?
But I will not say: "fuck off if you don't like what I write." It is a ignorant and irresponsible statement to make.
I keep quite when speakers from outside UTAR are conducting their presentation, I wear shoes to job interview session, I drive carefully, I definitely won't hit and run, I don't leave dishes on cafeteria table, I don't vandalize UTAR properties, I don't steal LCD screen from computer lab, I don't have hair like super saiyan
These are some small but crucial things and signs that people scrutinize and evaluate. Talking but not doing doesn't contribute a thing.
Read this before you enroll to UTAR
1. Does UTAR provide good education?
No. UTAR doesn't educate you. UTAR trains you. UTAR provides you with opportunities to acquire skills and knowledge that are fundamental (but important) to future employment or further education. Education and training are two different things.
The course structure includes many irrelevant subjects (sometimes I think the management just put it in for the sake of creating jobs for more lecturers), and leaves out many crucial subjects (may be UTAR doesn't not have the resources needed to include the subjects).
But one thing for sure, UTAR puts in a lot of efforts mimicking the real world (I guess) - you'll have very little time to do very much works (if you do all your works inclusive of preparing for tutorials). Therefore you need to keep up very good discipline and good time management.
2. Does UTAR have good lecturers?
Yes, it depends on your definition of "good". If a good lecturer is those who give "tips" for midterm and final exam, then you'll have plenty of good lecturers.
If you define "good" as having a lecturer who can inspire you, discuss with you, stimulate your growth, perhaps you're asking too much. However, there are a few lecturers that I really admire in UTAR.
The problem with UTAR is that it doesn't have enough brain-power and doesn't not allocate the brain-power evenly. Many lecturers (including those experienced ones) are reluctant to be transferred to Kampar branch, and many lecturers in Kampar are new and lack of skill and experience in lecturing. Mind you I'm not saying Kampar's lecturers do not have enough knowledge, I emphasize on skill and experience of conducting lecture.
3. Does UTAR have good facilities?
The most important facility you'll need is a good library. A good library must possesses books and journals that you'll need for your academy, and must have other books that you can read to gain knowledge beyond your text books. UTAR library is not adequate, therefore you'll find it difficult to get journals and information you need for your assignments and final year project (aka thesis). Books are scattered among branches, so you might not be able to get the book you want immediately if it is not in that particular library. Fortunately, librarians are generally helpful.
Gymnasium and sport complex are pay per entry and rent on hourly basis respectively. Cafeterias don't provide good or healthy food, prices are no cheaper than outside the campus (or more expensive).
4. What are UTAR students like?
If unfair to judge UTAR base on students' attitudes and behaviors. But if you are to come to UTAR I think you should be acknowledged.
Most of the students like to complain for no reason, some complain for they believe it's an initiative to trigger improvement of UTAR, some complain about students who complain. The first type of students basically complain and put all the blames on UTAR for everything goes wrong in their lives. The second type is often mistaken as the first type, typical initiative paradox. The last type thinks they are protecting the reputation of the university, but they contribute very little in actuality.
It's not a culture here to raise doubts and questions in classroom. It's not a culture here to answer questions either. Students here prefer to copy answer than find out the way to get answer. Spoon-feeding is the culture here, critical thinking is not encouraged.
90% of students are Chinese, mostly converse in Mandarin and other dialects. If one of your goals is to brush up your English, you should mix around with English-speaking friends, otherwise you might not be able to achieve that goal. Many told me they can't speak well so they don't speak to avoid embarrassment, I told them it's better to be embarrassed now than later when you out to the society.
5. Why should you choose UTAR?
Its fee is cheaper relative to other private colleges like Taylor, Inti, Monash, and etc. UTAR's graduates have high employment rate (but low salary). UTAR has stricter enrollment requirements. UTAR exams are more difficult as compared to other colleges (according to a friend of mine who been to UTAR and now in MMU). You graduate with a degree, not diploma (if you manage to graduate).
6. Why shouldn't you choose UTAR
UTAR management is the one thing disappointing me the most. Rigidity is in their veins even though they teach us about empowerment and flexibility. Students points of view and opinions are seldom taken into management's account of consideration prior making any decision that could affect the students.
UTAR management has a lot of rooms for improvement.
7. Do I regret coming to UTAR?
No. Why should I or what is the point to regret?
I complained a lot, but I was not complaining about UTAR as it is an object that has no thinking and emotion. Its personality derived from its management or the brain. It's the management people are complaining, not the object itself.
A good university must has three essential components - management, academic personnel, students. Management's job is to stimulate facilitate the growth of the other two components. The academic personnel's job is to facilitate students and help management to achieve its academic goals. While students have to improve in term of academic performance and other aspects.
Why should we compromise when things could and should be improved?
P.S.
Dedicate to haters - How to uphold UTAR image?
P.P.S.
This post is not to tarnish UTAR's image. I merely point out the results of my observations so you can adapt better to UTAR's campus life.
Lecturer Hit Student and Ran
A UTAR student was pissed when she was updating her blog (update: post has been removed), not because her friend was injured in a traffic collision but her anger was triggered by stupidity demonstrated by irresponsible driver who hit her friend and ran away from scene. Guess what, the idiot is having a job to give lecture in UTAR.
A few passer-by saw the incident and eventually tailed the driver and brought her back to the victim. The lecturer responded : "I go home to have my lunch!" "I totally lost my appetite and I was planning to go back to see her (the poor student who was being hit)." Victim and friends were speechless.
The victim's parents have been contacted and immediately came to Kampar, worrying the daughter's condition. The lecturer refused to see the victim's parents, insisted they (the victim's parents) were intended to hurt her. For more information, click here.
Well, I'm sure the safety of a student is no match to a lecturer's stomach. Of cos she has to eat, if she doesn't fueled up she will suffer gastric. Is gastric not more suffering and more painful than being crashed by a car? Is starving not more torturing than bleeding and having bone fractures?
Lecturer is always more valuable than a student, because she is highly educated and she is more productive and she is knowledgeable. Losing her would be a great loss of talent for Malaysia. On the other hand, losing a student will not do any harm to the society.
Anyway, so many people die everyday, why care? The lecturer was correct, her stomach is definitely more important than an injured girl.
For her own safety, she of cos had to refuse to see the victim's parents. You know those Chinese parents are normally not educated mah, what if they really grab a shovel and hit her right at her face? It would definitely leave scar and she would loss her pretty and attractive face.
Is UTAR Racist?
Is UTAR racist? This question popped when I discovered this comment in Tun Mahathir's weblog.
In his comment, Shakeel mentioned that felt he has been discriminated. As a Muslim, he has to fast for all day long during Bulan Ramadan and only allowed to Buka Puasa after day. However, he has lecture until 8pm every Wednesday thus he has to starve if he were to attend the lecture. Lecturer did not have plan to end class earlier nor give response when this issue was brought up by him.
He felt disrespected as a Muslim and thought there is strong racism in UTAR as other higher learning institutions either private or public are able to provide Muslims with time to buka puasa, UTAR doesn't care about he because he is a minority in UTAR.
If he were to read this, I will say UTAR is not a racist university but merely a careless university. If UTAR is racist, it wouldn't accept Indian and Malay students or any other races in the first place. We just need to bring up the issue to the correct person, I have sent an email to our president and written a feedback to management regarding the problem and I hope they will take proper actions to solve it. Since the university is opened to all, there is a strong need to understand all the cultures and do adjustment according to the status quo. It's not fair to sacrifice someone just because someone is minority.
p.s.
Anyway, I suggest Shakeel to negotiate with his lecturer so he can attend the lecture at some other time, as not only one class will be conducted in most of the papers.
KTM - Money Sucker!
Today, I found out that KTM's customer service's feedback system is not working as well. I tried using different browsers just in case it doesn't support but sadly, it just does not work.I guess it's a way to avoid complaint.
Nonetheless, those mentioned earlier are not really the issue. I can bare with poor customer service, I accept poor punctuality since we are in Malaysia, I take its useless online system as a joke. In fact, I think its website is uglier than my blog.
But this time it has gone way too far. It has canceled two stops at Sungai Buloh and Kepong Sentral for intercity shuttle train service KL-Ipoh.
I don't understand the why would it canceled the two stops since many people are boarding and even stopping at these stations. I am also one of the victims and I believe the cancellation has affected many other students and passengers. Now we have to stop at Rawang or KL Sentral and buy another ticket to go back to the station that we passed in the shuttle train.
Don't understand what I said? Never mind, see the diagram below.
Now KTM will not stop at Kepong Sentral and Sg.Buloh, which means it can earn more money by making us to buy another ticket to go back to where we want to be. For my case, I'll have to pay another RM1.60 to go back to Kepong from KL Sentral. What a good money-making strategy. But its strategy costs us not only money, but time as well! Now I have to travel an hour longer and earlier!
YTL Communications Gives Students Free 4G Internet Connections! Bravo!
Anyway, the benefit comes with a program called Education Partner Program (EPP). Through the program, YTL will provide 4G Internet services to students in all public universities! That would enable students to surf Internet at speed of Superman from anywhere within the campus (My hostel just 500 meters away from campus, so I assume I can use it from house also!)
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman or better known as UTAR is the 1st private university joins EPP. UTAR students, this is the best thing ever happened to us! *THUMBS UP* However, there is no detail regarding when will be the services released, so just stay tuned. For more information, visit YTL communications.
Now this is what we call a Corporate Social Responsibility!
My 1st Holiday Program - Home Stay at Kampung
I was allocated to a family with another 2 students, one Indian and one Malay. When we first arrived at the house, we were stunned, because we were totally isolated from other participants, the family stays in palm oil estate. Frankly speaking, the house condition is within my expectation, but things are just feeling so different when I really have to stay there for few days. Did not have good night sleep for the 1st night, the weather was just too damn hot and the room was really stuffy.
The 2nd morning, we were asked to help the local community to prepare a 'kenduri' or in other words to help prepare food and decoration for event. The 1st thing we saw when we reached there was a slaughtered cow laid in blood.
Pocong, ghost wrapped with white fabric
This ghost is very fashionable, other think it's Michael Jackson, but I personally think it's KISS
Halloween Malay version
i think this game is called 'Lagi jauh lagi sayang', throw water balloon to teammate without breaking it. The last team survived wins the game.
See how happy he is, this is pure happiness

UTAR
I have learned from the program, the people there and the participants from UiTM. We have shared knowledge and thoughts, and finally we realized that all we want are peace and equity. We are all very open-minded rather than racist. We want a better future for all of us as Malaysian rather being selfish and only care about ourselves.
Life in kampung and life is city are totally different I can say, the pace of life and even the thinking are way too different. If we are going to achieve Wawasan 2020, there's no doubt we should provide the best education to every Malaysian regardless one's race or ethnic. Equity should be exist in everything then harmony will follow.
Holiday
Don't get me wrong, holiday is cool, and I love holiday, but seeing other people going for vacation while I have never been to any foreign country is such a bad feeling.
Nevertheless, I have got myself something beneficial to do this sem break, it's a community service joint organized by Rakan Muda and UiTM, while UTAR is letting its students to participate for the very first time. We will go to a village or kampung and stay with local families for few days. According to the person in charge, there will be some typical activities like sport and 'gotong-royong', we might have the opportunity to follow the allocated families to learn and help their daily jobs.
After the community service over, I hope to go to a beach and bring along my girl, since she has never been to beach before.
Facebook removed my group
I created a group called UTAR Hall Of Shame (previously named as UTAR Ganasai) for UTAR students to share their thoughts and opinions over issues in our university. The group had approximately 600 members and was constantly growing. However, there are people who are do not respect the freedom of speech and would like us to shut up. They then decided to sabotage our effort by reporting us as inappropriate.
Unfortunately, we are outnumbered by this group of people. Facebook requires certain amount of reports before it will take action such as remove inappropriate content or worse —— remove the group completely.
However, we are not going to give up our right to speak out. We have formed another group 'UTAR Ganasai II' to continue explore more issues and problems in our university.
UTAR is using pirated Window 7
I captured these photos when I was using the computer lab in UTAR. So I wonder if UTAR also installed pirated software in all its computer? Or this is just a coincident that UTAR so "sui" to be a victim of counterfeiting?
Update
A commenter known as dingsk87 enlightened me. He claimed that UTAR didn't using pirated Microsoft Window 7(Win7). It was actually trial version (Free download) from Microsoft before full version Window 7 were available. According to him, the trial version was expired and UTAR had not register for a new OEM code (sounds high-tech but I have no idea what that is).
Why UTAR Students are so Busy?
No surprise if you see students start to scarify their sleeping time to prepare their reports. No surprise to see students start to swear and blame UTAR for killing them by putting all the assignment submission date and midterm exams together.
I'm also one of the unmotivated and unplanned students who do works last minute, but I would never blame others for my own fault.
UTAR and our lecturers have given us enough times to conduct any study and research, not lesser than 8 weeks which is 2 months.
It's our own problems for not doing any planning and not supervise and motivate our team to do works.
My tutor does not recognize me!
She asked my class, "Where is the guy who always has a lot of ideas and always asks me questions? He is not here? I guess he is tired and trying to have rest after a long day."
WTH? I was just sitting there and all my classmates turned their heads to me suddenly. It's kinna embarrassing man.
I guess next time I would sit in front of her just in case she forgets me again.
Back to Campus
This sem I'm having 5 subjects, and we call it theory paper, because the subjects are involving a lot of theories and more theories. Which means a lot of memorizing activities will take place in the next 14 weeks. Study is never a easy and pleasant task.
Nevertheless, life has to go on and I have to finish my study in another one and a half years. Enjoy our campus life to the fullest for all my friends who is studying in college or university.
My Final Exam Result Released
Goddamn it, I only got 2 Bs. I was expecting at least 1 A, but instead I got this. Anyway, CGPA did increase a little bit. Appreciate that.
Selfish Students with Selfish Attitude
I was having the last lecture for Pengajian Malaysia today morning, and next week it will be the final exam. Needless to say, the lecture was packed and crowded. Seats were not enough for all student to be seated. When I walked into the lecture hall, I found myself a seat, but a girl and her friend who were sitting beside told me the seat is taken. They have reserved 5 seats for their friends who were late to the class. Frankly speaking, I was not happy with it, but still, I moved myself to another seat since there were still plenty of available seats.
The game rule is like this, if you want to reserve for your friends, YES, you CAN, but please be considerate and observant! Your friends are 20 minutes late to the class, so you do not keep their reservation any longer, unless there are still available seats out there! But hell no, there ain't no seat already! People were entering the class late and were looking for seats and those selfish people were still keeping their seats for friends who ended up absent!
People were sitting on the steps and ironically, there were empty seats just beside them, reserved by few selfish people! I'm pretty sure they were pissed off like me.
Something that is even more fragile than glass
The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward.
quoted from Rocky Balboa the Italian StallionOnly when you feel pain, you understand pain.
Life is fragile, and it's even more vulnerable than glass.
We, human are nothing great at all. The forces of nature is far beyond our knowledge and prediction. Everyday, people live, and people die. People born as a nobody, people die as a somebody. When we die, we leave pain to our family, lover, and friends.
Sometime, I wonder. It's the pain, the pain of losing an important person in life. Or the pain, it's because death remind us of our mortality.
Some people live to die and some people die to live.
But, what is the truth about life?
When we die, we leave nothing but pain and memory, nothing else. And nothing else is significant anymore.
UTARIAN swept-away bodies are found
As my expectation, they were gone.
The bodies of 3 victims, who brought away by the strong current were found last night. James Khor Wan Kai was found at 10.20pm while the girl, Kelly Yew Shy Gin was found at 11.10pm. And the last corpse, belongs to Yew Ghim Chnieh was discovered 500 feet from the incident scene at 12.00am

Yew Ghim Chnieh in his secondary school uniform, 1 good looking dude
I went to the police investigation site last night, with the hope that seeing their bodies in good condition. However, I did not see them, because 2 of them were already moved to hospital and 1 was till missing.
There were approximately 100 people, most of them were locals who were gather around to fulfill their own curiosity, instead of give a helping hand to the search. But they are not to be blamed, because it was late at night, only people who familiar with the jungle, as well as professional should take action.
Anyway, the accident has happened, and we cannot press Ctrl + Z to undo it. But I really hope, the incident will serve as a lesson, a warning as well as a reminder for people who want to go to waterfall.
DO NOT GO INTO WATER WHEN AND AFTER RAIN!

UTARIAN current-swept-away Identities Confirmed
The missing are James Wan Kai Khor, 20, from Penang, Yew Ghin Chnieh, 20, from Penang and Yew Shy Gin, 19, from Kedah, said Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon State Health, Local Government, Consumer, Environment, Transport and Non-Islamic Affairs Committee head.
Dr Mah said he had spoken to a fourth student who told him that the three boys and a girl had gone to the waterfalls at about 5pm. The three missing went into the water first.
The fourth student, a male, was about to enter the water when a strong gush of water tumbled him in. As he struggled to scramble out, he suffered cuts and bruises.
Fortunately, a Kampar resident rushed over, pulled him out and took him to the Kampar police station to lodge a report.
According to Dr Mah, the 22-year-old second year Accountancy student from Kuala Lumpur declined to be named and did not wish to speak to reporters.

James Wan Kai Khor and his blog
I saw them! I can't believe that I saw them when I was leaving but I did not stop them from going into the water! They were sitting and waiting for the rain to stop in a dark color jeep, either dark green or grey, I'm not sure.
The driver was reaching out his hand outside the window to see whether it's still raining. While the one who was sitting beside, is the girl. They were talking to each other happily, and I can see the girl was smiling.
I should have warn them and ask them to leave. If I did, the tragedy might not happen.
UTARIAN swept away by current, Presumed Dead
Please leave water immediately when the rain hits you, when you are in waterfall!
Unless you are willing to risk your friends, your family, your partner and your very own life!
I was there, at the Batu Berangkai waterfall this afternoon. Approximately 4.00pm, I received a call from my friends, asked me to join them to have some chill-out in waterfall. The idea was actually already there before they call, so immediately I took a towel and left to meet them.
Hot weather in Kampar makes Batu Berangkai waterfall a place that I go very often. But frankly speaking, I'm not very familiar with it because I do not know how to swim. I wouldn't risk my life to go into deep water at the top of waterfall (the deepest area is approximately 10-15 feet) and you, should not do it neither!
While we were having fun, the rain was started to drop down. There were many other people, some familiar faces, local. They were all getting out of the water and left, of cause, including us. We waited under a shelter for the rain to stop, and about 5.30pm we left.
After that, the tragedy happened...

More to come

I received the news after I reached home. The tragedy happened right after we left.
I feel lucky for escaped from the tragedy but at the same time I feel sad for the 3 victims. If I were there, maybe, just maybe, I could stop them to go back into the water.
Swept away by such a strong current, I wanted to tell you that they can survive, but this ain't fairytale. They are most probably gone.
Please, think twice before you put your life on edge.
